Dancing about music , rather than talking about ( the musical mind ’ s ) architecture : a review of Marc Leman ’ s Embodied Music Cognition and Mediation Technology

چکیده
Leman’s latest book is a refreshing treatment for the traditional (by which I mean: disembodied) cognitive science of music. What is more, the book serves as a starting point of an almost natural (given the recent variety of empirical data from empirical musicology and the studies on musical gestures, musical movement and the biomechanics of the body) application of the paradigm of embodied cognition into musical research, this work most certainly stands as a manifesto of the paradigm of what the author calls the theory of embodied music cognition (hereafter: EMC). By the means of looking at the role of the body in music processing, Leman’s work encourages us to shift away from the classical (disembodied) research on music (including aesthetics, and more generally: philosophy of music, still relying mainly on the linguistic descriptions of, for instance, musical experience), hence, the reference to the Frank Zappa quote 57 in the title of this review. Embodied Music Cognition and Mediation Technology is exciting due to its being grounded in the out-

The Music Paint Machine: Stimulating Self-monitoring Through the Generation of Creative Visual Output Using a Technology-enhanced Learning Tool
In this paper, we discuss the pedagogically grounded and research-based design of a technology-enhanced learning tool, the Music Paint Machine. This interactive music system introduces a musical experience in which the musician creates a digital painting by playing an acoustic musical instrument and by moving the body on a coloured pressuremat. As a learning tool it aims at the development of m...

In traditional architecture, the adherence of architects to the rules and proportions in numbers, geometry and music is present in designing and shaping many public monuments, and mathematical proportions, artistic ratios, or musical proportions are used in geometry of these buildings. Extracting and matching mathematical rules and proportions and examining them in the architecture of the tradi...
متن کاملAction-based effects on music perception
The classical, disembodied approach to music cognition conceptualizes action and perception as separate, peripheral processes. In contrast, embodied accounts of music cognition emphasize the central role of the close coupling of action and perception. It is a commonly established fact that perception spurs action tendencies. We present a theoretical framework that captures the ways in which the...

Background in musicology Understanding the gesture-based foundations of musical involvement opens a number of new perspectives for musicology, with the likely effect of a change in approach. Giving justice to the role of gesture in music calls for an integrated view of perception and action, which implies a shift from auditory-based cognition towards embodied cognition, an approach that include...
متن کاملThe Influence of Body Movements on Children’s Perception of Music with an Ambiguous Expressive Character
The theory of embodied music cognition states that the perception and cognition of music is firmly, although not exclusively, linked to action patterns associated with that music. In this regard, the focus lies mostly on how music promotes certain action tendencies (i.e., dance, entrainment, etc.). Only recently, studies have started to devote attention to the reciprocal effects that people's b...
